Our new build home journey

Never would I have thought that I’d be writing blog post about my life in a new build home. I’ve always dreamed of owning an old home with lots of character. I’ve never really liked the idea of a house without a back story, I felt new build homes lacked character and warmth. But the wonderful thing is, that’s our job! It’s our job as a family to give the house a story, to warm it up with our love and style and to give it character, our character.

We began looking at new build homes when a friend gave me a bit of a reality check. Every house I looked at on Rightmove I wanted to change. Even if it had a brand new bathroom or kitchen, it wasn’t MY bathroom or kitchen, so I wanted to rip it out and start again, something we definitely didn’t have the budget for. So my friend said to me “you want a brand new bathroom and kitchen, and you want cream/magnolia walls that you can put your stamp on … Why the hell aren’t you looking at new builds?!” And she was right! Two weeks later and we had signed for our beautiful home.

We had had an offer accepted on a two up two down a few weeks before, that fell through the day before we were due to sign. I was told time and time again, don’t get excited and don’t buy or plan anything until you have the keys in your hand because anything can happen. Did I listen to the advice? Of course I bloody didn’t, this is my first home after all! So when the house fell through I was heartbroken. When we signed for our new build I was allowed to be excited. I was allowed to look forward to it and enjoy every part of the process as it couldn’t be taken away from me. There’s no chain to worry about, there’s no ‘pulling out’, it’s done and it’s ours from day one.

We ended up choosing a bigger style of house when we viewed the estate, we maxed out our deposit, took a chunk from the wedding budget and got the biggest home we could get! So we’d gone from buying a two up two down terrace house with no garden or parking; to a three bed detached home with a drive, garage and large garden!

My favourite part about the whole process was picking out the kitchen and bathroom, I had such a clear vision in my head of what I wanted. Luckily I have a very understanding and laid back other half who allowed me to have what I wanted, as he wasn’t particularly bothered (“a kitchen is a kitchen at the end of the day babe” – NO IT ISN’T ITS SO MUCH MORE THAN THAT!)

We bought our house when it was fully built, it was just the interior that needed completing. This was both a blessing and a curse. It was a blessing because we didn’t have endless months to wait before we moved in, however once a plug point or light switch is in, it’s in. If you buy your house off plan, you have the freedom to move plugs, tv points etc. Which in hind sight would have been a massive bonus.

I’ve done a blog about hints and tips of new build home buying but if you have any questions at all please feel free to message me on Instagram – link to follow me is on my homepage.

We’ve been in our home for around 8 months now (bloody crazy!) and I wouldn’t change a thing. We’ve made some incredible friends, we have an amazing home and everything has turned out perfectly.
